Crop insurance built around your Iowa operation
A single hailstorm, a wet spring, or a market swing can undo a year of work. Crop insurance is how Iowa producers protect the income their operation depends on, and choosing the right coverage, at the right level, before the deadline is where a knowledgeable local agent earns their keep.
Farm & Home Services is an independent insurance agency in Algona, which means we are not tied to a single company. We compare crop insurance options from multiple carriers and build coverage that fits your acres, your crops, and your risk tolerance. And when a claim happens, you work with people you know here in north central Iowa, not a call center.
Types of crop insurance we offer
Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI)
The federally backed, subsidized foundation of most Iowa producers’ protection. MPCI covers yield or revenue losses from a broad range of causes, including drought, excess moisture, hail, frost, and disease. We help you choose between yield protection and revenue protection and set a coverage level that matches your operation. Because MPCI is federally regulated, it carries firm deadlines. The sales closing date for Iowa spring crops is typically March 15.
Crop Hail Insurance
Hail can flatten a field in minutes, often after MPCI’s deductible leaves a gap. Crop hail is a private policy you can add on top of MPCI, with acre-by-acre coverage that frequently pays from the first bushel of loss. We represent crop-focused carriers including Rain and Hail and Farmers Mutual Hail (FMH).
Revenue Protection
When both your yields and market prices matter, revenue protection helps guard against income loss from low production, falling prices, or a combination of the two. We walk through how price movement affects your guarantee so there are no surprises.
Prevented Planting and Replant Coverage
Iowa springs do not always cooperate. When wet fields keep you from planting by the final planting date, or you have to replant after a loss, these provisions can protect you, but the decisions are time-sensitive. We help you run the numbers when it counts.

Frequently asked questions about crop insurance
When is the crop insurance deadline in Iowa?
For most Iowa spring crops (corn and soybeans), the sales closing date is typically March 15, the last day to buy, cancel, or change MPCI coverage for that crop year. Dates vary by crop and county, so confirm yours with us.
What is the difference between MPCI and crop hail insurance?
MPCI is federally subsidized and covers a broad range of perils affecting yield or revenue, but carries a deductible. Crop hail is a private add-on that covers hail on an acre-by-acre basis, often from the first bushel of loss. Many Iowa producers carry both.
Do I need crop insurance if I already have farm insurance?
Usually yes. Farm insurance protects your buildings, equipment, livestock, and liability; crop insurance protects the growing crop and its revenue.
